Choquequirao is Quechua for “Golden Cradle”. Although this is probably not its original Inca name, the mysterious and dazzling Inca city of Choquequirao is located in the beautiful landscape of the Vilcabamba mountain range over the Apurimac River Canyon. It is another “lost city of the Incas” located high on a ridge spur, almost 1750m above the raging glacier-fed Apurimac River and surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.
These beautiful ruins are still rarely visited. The remoteness and inaccessibility have discouraged many visitors. Casa Lena makes the 3 or 4 day hike less demanding by starting and ending at the little town Capuliyoc. The drive from Curahuasi to Capuliyoc takes about one hour and a half, leaving Casa Lena at 6:30 in the morning arriving at Capuliyoc by 8 am where, with some luck, you can enjoy the early morning flight of the Condors.
In comparison with tours that start from Cusco you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night or start the trekking too late when the sun is already high and bright.
Casa Lena offers a 3 days/2 nights or 4 days/3 nights trip, depending on your walking pace. It is possible to adapt the number of nights during the trip. As we like to go off the beaten path, we have planned our days differently from most common treks offering more time at the site of Choquequirao itself.
We also offer transportation to Cachora or to the viewpoint of Capuliyoc for tourists visiting the site without a guide. Going directly to Capuliyoc saves you a walk of approximately 3 hours. It is also possible to have us waiting for you when you arrive in Capuliyoc. We will bring some refreshments and snacks, and take you back to Casa Lena for hot showers and rest, exactly what you need after a demanding trek.
